Museum mission

The Museum was established in Rīga in 1993 by the Occupation Museum Association (before 2006 - Foundation) to:

- Provide information about Latvia and its people under two occupying totalitarian regimes, Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia, from 1940 to 1991;

- Remind the world of the wrongdoings committed by foreign powers against the state and the people of Latvia;

- Remember those who perished, who suffered, and who fled the terror of the occupying regimes.

Building for the future Drafts for the Museum's enlargment project, which we call Nākotnes Nams (NN, Building for the Future), have been completed, and the City Building Office has issued an architectural planning permit setting forth certain conditions and approvals that must be obtained before preparation of technical drawings.
The project's architect, notable Latvian-American architect Gunars Birkerts, believes: "The Bretheren's Cemetery, the Freedom Monument, and the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia are three symbolically important points in Riga's city plan." About the Museum's new form he says: "The architecture of the Occupation Museum facade composition, both on the side of Rātslaukums (Town Hall Square) and on the side of Strēlnieku laukums (Riflemen's Square), is a significant testifier to its era's architecture and a contributor to the formation of Riga's city environment."

Currently, about three quarters of the Museum's annual expenses are funded by donations.  The generosity of donors allows the museum to continue its work as a testament of the occupation years.  Furthermore, this work would not be possible without the stories, the documents, and the artifacts of those who survived the occupation period and who have shared their experiences with the Museum.  Volunteers are also greatly appreciated and encouraged to share their expertise and skills to continue our projects.  Please consider how you can help!
